Er was een tijd - een halve eeuw geleden - dat ik liedjes begon te zingen waarbij ik mijzelf op gitaar begeleidde. Aanvankelijk waren dat meest Engelse folksongs, waarmee ik in 1967 debuteerde onder de naam Charlie McDungday.
Once upon a time - half a century ago - I started singing songs, accompanying myself on guitar. Initially I sang mostly English folksongs with which I made my first appearance in 1967 under the name of Charlie McDungday.Ik speelde in die jaren op een oerdegelijke twaalfsnarige Italiaanse Eko ('di prima qualità'), met een mooi, warm geluid, waarmee ik verschillende keren heel Engeland door liftte - van de krijtrotsen in Sussex tot aan de Hooglanden in Schotland.
In those years I played a sturdy twelf string Italian Eko ('di prima qualità') with a nice warm sound. I carried it along on several of my hitchhiking jouneys troughout the UK - from the White Cliffs of Dover up into the Highlands of Scotland.Blackleg miner - een mijnwerkerslied afkomstig uit het gebied rond de River Tyne - behoorde tot mijn vaste repertoire. Er bestaat nog een rudimentaire opname van, ooit gemaakt in Frankrijk en op de plaat gezet onder de titel Charlie chante.
Blackleg miner - a traditional Norththumberland mining song - belonged to my favourit repertoire. There still exists a rudimentary recording made in France, in 1971, which appeared on record with some of my other songs, under the title 'Charlie chante'.

Twee andere mijnwerkersliederen voegde ik in later jaren aan mijn repertoire toe: He fades way van Alistair Hulett en The Prince of Darkness van Brian McNeill.
In de jaren zestig vormde ik samen met Arthur Schmidt (piano) en Ludo Pieters (drums) ook de Hotdog Bluesunit, een combo dat met jazzy blues verschillende malen optrad in de toentertijd vermaarde Rotterdamse Jazzclub B-14.
The sixties were also the era of my first band experience. Together with Arthur Schmidt (piano) enLudo Pieters (drums) I formed the Hotdog Bluesunit, a jazzy blues combo which performed more than once in the then famous Rotterdam Jazzclub B-14.
In the early seventies I set myself more and more to become a singer songwriter. I translated many a song from French, Geman and English. For me it was always about lyrics and music, being inspired by artists like George Moustaki, Reinhard Mey and Ralph McTell. Also the intriguing poetic work of Leonard Cohen fascinated me immensely. Like 'One of us cannot be wrong' which I translated into Dutch.

Daarnaast schreef ik eigen nummers, die mij op een talentenjacht in het Rotterdamse 'Winkeltje' van Ansje van Brandenberg enig succes brachten.
I also started to write and compose my own songs, which brought me some success in talent scoutings.

Een liedje dat ik veertig jaar later nog eens ter hand nam, in het Frans vertaalde en bewerkte. Hoewel de melodie dezelfde is, is de toonsoort aanmerkelijk gedaald☺.
A song which I translated forty years later into French while editing the lyrics somewhat. The melody remained of course the same but the key dropped considerably.

In 1973/74 maakte ik deel uit van de Utrechtse K.K. Sjo waarvan Philips (producent Ruud Bos) een live-LP op de markt bracht. Televisie- en radio-optredens volgden.
In 1973/74 I took part in a cabaret company called K.K. Sjo. It became an unexpected though short success. Philips recorded a live LP and we appeared in radio shows and on television.
Tussen cabaretesk werk en kolderieke levensliederen bracht ik mijn luisterliedjes, zoals Hartje van de stad, een vertaling van Ralph McTells 'Streets of London'. Later hertaalde ik de tekst en werd het kortweg De stad.
In between the predominantly cabaretesque work of our troupe I brought my more serious songs, one of which was a translation of Ralph McTell's 'Streets of London'.

Later on in the seventies I wrote many more songs, i.a. for a programme brought by Lenny Kuhr (winner of the 1969 Eurovision Song Contest).
Toen ik ‘Wie vor Jahr und Tag’ van Reinhard Mey in 1974 vertaalde, had ik niet de bedoeling het nummer zelf te zingen. Liesbeth List overwoog 'Sinds jaar en dag' in haar repertoire op te nemen, maar zag daarvan af toen Mey met zijn eigen vertaling ‘Als de dag van toen’ op de markt kwam.
I also made a translation of Reinhard Mey's 'Wie vor Jahr und Tag'. The famous Dutch singer Liesbeth List was going to perform it when Mey came to our surprise with his own Dutch version. This made Liesbeth List abandon the idea.
Ik beschouw mijn vertaling nu als een ode aan mijn wederhelft, rots in mijn branding, met wie ik al zo veel lief en leed heb gedeeld.
I now consider a homespun recording of my translation a tribute to my consort, my tower of strength, with whom I have shared the sweet and the bitter for so many years.
Eind jaren '80 schreef ik nog samen met Toine van Benthem de tekst van de Waku Waku leader (muziek Stephen Emmer), die werd gezongen door Ruth Jacott. De televisiequiz, waarin dieren een hoofdrol speelden, zou een jarenlang succes worden. Een hele generatie groeide ermee op.
At the end of the nineteen-eighties I wrote, together with my close friend Toine van Benthem, the lyrics for the leader of the television quiz Waku Waku, sang by Ruth Jacott. The quiz became a big hit on national television for many years which meant that our song grew into some sort of an icon.
Mijn actieve muziekleven is daarna stilgevallen, tot eind jaren negentig, toen ik toetrad toe tot de huisband van BZ. Het werden weer veel bluesmaten, zoals in de jaren zestig, maar in plaats van rokerige jazzkelders, stond ik nu voor danspubliek. Als coverband speelden we zo'n beetje alles. Helaas moest ik de band verlaten na een herseninfarct, dat tot gevolg heeft dat iedere vorm van hard(er) geluid mij fysiek onderuithaalt.
Afterwards my musical life came somewhat to a hold until ten years later a new guitar brought back all my dormant love for music. Shortly after, I joined the house band of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A boy's dream came true, playing covers and making people dance. Unfortunately I had to leave the band after a stroke (CVA) as a result of which I cannot bear any loud sound anymore.
Inmiddels heb ik de akoestische gitaar weer opgepakt en musiceer ik unplugged. Terug naar de basics, zoals Paul Simon, James Taylor, Eric Clapton en Jim Groce...
In the meantime I picked up my acoustic guitar again. Back to the basics: Paul Simon, James Taylor, Eric Clapton,, Jim Croce and others - unplugged, balm for my somewhat broken brain.
"Speaking with the angel", written by the Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, moved me when I heard it for the first time. Initially I related the song to a mentally retarded child. But when I listened more closely I soon understood the real meaning of the lyrics - not less moving! Now that I recently became grandfather I knew I had to sing it as a personal tribute to the new life. Just as a reminder for myself...

'The water is wide' is only one of my recent discoveries. I fell instantly in love with the tune when I heard it for the first time and decided to record this beautiful English traditional. My rendition is a mix of Kirk Lorange's and Ed Gerhard's guitar interpretations to which I added my own arrangement. The photo's in the clip - 'From dawn to dust' - I shot on the peninsula of Pelion (Greece), in October 2011. The paintings of the ship and the accordion player are details from works by Dimitris Maninis, a gifted artist from Tsangarada, Pelion.
'He fades away' is a song by the Glasgow born Alister Hulett (1951-2010). He wrote it after he witnessed the health misery of miners working in the Australian blue asbestos mines. During the last decades of his life he lived between the coal pits in Scotland where 'He fades away' was equally embraced by the coal miners who suffer in such large numbers from blacklung disease. I consider my rendition of this song a small tribute to the work of Tony Oppegard, a Kentucky lawyer who fights relentlessly in court for the safety rights of miners. Tony made me aware of the songs by the late Alistair Hulett.

This James Taylor song as sad as beautiful has been covered a million times. Why should one do it again? This is why... When, only recently, I heard JT perform Fire and rain in duet with Sheryl Crow it seemed like Susanne herself 'appeared' in that rendition. It broke my heart. I never sang a duet before but this was the song (JT's duet with Sheryl) that urged me to try it. Yet, I needed a push. To my surprise and delight my singing coach Inge asked me one day whether I knew 'Fire and rain' and if I would like to sing it with her (we never talked about the song before). Everything fell into place.

The lyrics of this song originate from a poem written by an unknown Far East prisoner or war. They inspired me to compose accompanying music. The poem puts in words the thoughts my uncle Karel (1922-1944) might have had when he went through the ordeal of several Nazi prisons and concentration camps after he was arrested during his flight from Holland to England where he wanted to join the Allied forces to fight against the enemy. Shortly before he left he got engaged to his big love, Dodo. He stood firm during much of his incarceration but his last camp, Flossenbürg, proved fatal to him.
